Growth Mindset

The Growth Mindset is based on the belief that "your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others." This is in contrast to a fixed mindset which is "the belief that your abilities are carved in stone." (Mindset 6-7)

Having a Growth Mindset is a competency that has been identified by the Ontario Ministry of Education as a 21st Century Competency. (21st Century Competencies 46)

The image demonstrates attitudes and self talk that characterizes students that have embraced a growth mindset. The authour also is Kirsten Tulisan, an educator from the US with a Master's degree in Education. The related blog post gives teachers practical advice on how to implement the Growth Mindset in their classrooms e.g. teaching students about brain plasticity,  engaging in positive self-talk and development of a Growth Mindset culture. She also mentions keeping in mind the needs of the individual students as you look to introduce the Growth Mindset.

The blog also provides links on where to learn more about the Growth Mindset at the bottom.

The level of reflection that can be engaged in with this resource is pedagogical reflection. Teachers are to establish the students' mindsets early on and devise activities that will lead them towards changing their fixed mindsets (should they have one) or further developing their growth mindsets. Teachers may routinely reflect on the effectiveness of their instruction regarding this topic and ask the students to reflect on their own learning as well.
